The BMW 507 Roadster. Just the name conjures images of sun-drenched coastal roads, effortless style, and a bygone era of automotive glamour. A mere 252 examples were ever produced between 1956 and 1959, making each one a highly coveted collector’s item. Now, a particularly desirable Series II model, with a fascinating history, is coming to auction via RM Sotheby’s, offering a rare opportunity to own a true piece of automotive history.

The 507’s creation was heavily influenced by the vision of New York importer Max Hoffman, the same man who championed the Porsche 356 Speedster and Mercedes-Benz 300 SL. He recognized a demand for a more accessible sports car in the American market, prompting BMW to develop a competitor to Mercedes-Benz’s offerings. The result, penned by the talented Count Albrecht Goertz, was nothing short of breathtaking. Powered by a 3.2-litre alloy V-8 engine mated to a four-speed manual gearbox, the 507 became an instant icon, arguably the most beautiful design ever to wear the BMW roundel. Its limited production run, reportedly due to BMW losing money on each car sold, only added to its mystique.

This particular example, chassis 70136, was produced on 5 May 1958, making it a desirable Series II model. This update brought improvements to cabin and luggage space, enhancing the car’s practicality. Originally finished in Altelfenbein (old ivory), this 507 boasts a truly international history. It was initially displayed at the BMW Pavillon in Munich before being shipped to Havana, Cuba, on 7 June 1958.

After a period shrouded in some mystery, the car resurfaced in Germany in the mid-1980s and was acquired by the current consignor in 1988. Shortly thereafter, a comprehensive restoration was undertaken over six years. Reputable Munich-based BMW specialists Brummer handled the mechanical overhaul, while the bodywork was meticulously restored by Hagl in Attenkirchen, Bavaria. This substantial restoration is said to have cost a considerable sum, demonstrating the owner’s dedication to preserving this automotive masterpiece.

Today, this 507 Roadster is presented in a striking black finish, complemented by matching centre-lock Rudge wheels and a folding soft-top. The interior is elegantly trimmed in grey upholstery. Importantly, the car retains its matching-numbers engine (stamped 40147) and also comes with a rare colour-matching hard-top roof, a spare fuel tank, and its original owner’s guides.

With notable former owners including Elvis Presley, John Surtees, Bernie Ecclestone, and Ursula Andress, the BMW 507 Roadster has secured its place as one of the most glamorous and sought-after cars ever created. This specific example, offered after 36 years of careful ownership, presents a truly exceptional opportunity to acquire a piece of automotive legend.
