Stunning Visuals

Mercedes have created a lot of eye-catching cars in their time but, in our opinion here at Coolector HQ at least, this 1963 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster might be one of the most attractive and luxurious of the bunch. When first released back in the 1950s, the Mercedes-Benz 300SL instantly attracted the sort of buyers that you might expect, with the likes of the Duke of Edinburgh, King Hussein of Jordan, King Baudoin of Belgium, King Constantin of Greece and movie stars like Sophia Loren and Clark Gable all getting their hands on this incredible machine.

A truly fascinating machine, the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster has been a favourite of car enthusiasts and engineers since its release and the space frame is highly intuitive and cleverly designed with the high, wide door sills replacing the torsional stiffness which has been sacrificed to the gullwing doors, with a tilt wheel which makes it easier for the driver to access. The Bosch mechanical fuel injection works smoothly and the 215 bhp, 2,992 cc 6-cylinder engine is canted 30 degrees to lower the hood. The interior of these vehicle are second to none, with a light and spacious feel alongside fitted luggage compartments which makes the most of the trunk space.

The opportunity to purchase such a well kept 1963 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster via the RM Sotheby’s auction in August is one that will be too good to pass up for one lucky luxury car enthusiasts and this stunning ride is definitely amongst the most attractive we’ve seen going under the gavel here at Coolector HQ. When the Roadster was first released, a hardtop was optional, as were Rudge knockoff wheels and the fitted luggage space. As with the majority of Gullwings, the body was made in steel, with aluminium doors, bonnet and boot lid. This spectacular vehicle remained one of the fastest sports cars of its time, with top speed from 133 mph to 155.

Style and Comfort

Impeccable style and performance are part and parcel of the 1963 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster and it will be up for auction at RM Sotheby’s Monterrey auction in August. For those with a serious love of the most stylish classic cars on the market, this would be a most welcome addition to a collection indeed and it has been kept in fine condition by a private owner for many years and comes in full working order.

RM Sotheby’s so consistently have amazing machines ready and waiting to be snapped up but this is without a doubt one of our favourites we’ve encountered so far here at The Coolector. The 1963 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster is breathtaking from an aesthetic point of view and delivers an out of this world performance to boot. Win, win.
