1964 Porsche 904 GTS

RM Sotheby’s are one of the best in the business when it comes to offering some real gems in the luxury car market but their Paris auction in February has one of the coolest we’ve seen in a while in the shape of this, quite frankly stunning, 1964 Porsche 904 GTS.

The 1964 Porsche 904 GTS from RM Sotheby’s is a beautifully presented example of Porsche’s seminal racing sports car and, needless to say, there is a lot of interest in this lot – even with the eye-watering £2m guide price. This spectacular steed was delivered new to future Porsche factory driver Udo Schütz and it raced in rounds of the 1964, 1965, and 1966 World Sportscar Championships.

There is an awful lot of history to this 1964 Porsche 904 GTS (hence the lofty price tag) and it was class winner of the 1965 Nürburgring 1000 km; before later being driven to 1st place at the 1966 Austrian Hillclimb Championship by Rudi Lins. It has some serious racing heritage, that’s for sure.

Boasting a continuous history from new, including ownership with Bobby Rahal, this lot is one of RM Sotheby’s most sought-after at their Paris auction and don’t be surprised if it goes over its guide price. When it went into Rahal’s ownership, the machine was fully restored, and it was subsequently race prepared in order to contest the 2002 editions of the Tour Auto and Le Mans Classic.

It was then purchased by the previous owner, a well-known historic racer, who competed with it at the 2018 Le Mans Classic. Following this event, it passed into current ownership in 2019.

Not many 904s have such an exceptional period history as this giant-killing example from RM Sotheby’s and an even smaller number can claim such unbroken history and unparalleled provenance of chassis 036. Presented in fantastic condition, this 904 is ready to be enjoyed at some of the finest historic events in the world or displayed at major Concours.
