Ferraris have an enduring quality that is impossible to ignore but, it’s fair to say, they were in a real golden age in the 1960s and the vehicles from this era are beyond compare from an aesthetic point of view. Well, courtesy of the guys at Auxietre & Schmidt, you’ve got a chance to get your hands on this mesmerising 1966 Ferrari 275 GTS which, let’s face it, is right up there with the best of them from a visual perspective and it’s in remarkably good condition.
This 1966 Ferrari 275 GTS from Auxietre & Schmidt will be the crowning glory of any classic car aficionado’s collection and with good reason. This amazing machine is equipped with its original matching number engine and was originally delivered in Argento 20265A with pelle Bleu. It is European registered and has been painstakingly restored by marque expert Roelofs Engineering.
Unbelievable Engineering
Needless to say, there had been open-top Ferrari road cars before the advent of the ‘250’ series, but it was, principally, Pininfarina’s offerings on the latter chassis that marked the convertible as a mainstay of the Ferrari line up. After the experimentation and variety which characterised the coachwork of the 250-series cars, the arrival of the ‘275’ in 1964 brought with it standard bodywork that immediately impressed. In standard trim the GTS’s Colombo-type, 60-degree, V12 engine produced 260bhp at 7,000rpm, some 20 horsepower fewer than when installed in the contemporary 275GTB.
This amazing 1966 Ferrari 275 GTS from Auxietre & Schmidt is a marvel of modern engineering and boasts such a striking and effortlessly cool visual impact that it’s impossible not to fall in love the minute you lay your eyes upon its unparalleled beauty. The adoption of a rear-mounted five-speed transaxle combined the now all-synchromesh gearbox and differential in a single unit which helped to enhance and improve the weight distribution of the vehicle, and this feature would characterise future generations of front-engined Ferrari road cars.
Stunningly attractive, this offering from Auxietre & Schmidt is the 114th of just 200 examples ever built, and was supplied new for the US market via Luigi Chinetti Motors of Greenwich, CT. The assembly sequence was #114 and the body no. was PF 175114. 07615 was originally finished in Argento 20265A with Pelle Bleu VM3015 to the interior which delivers a breathtaking and understated elegance that we’re loving here at Coolector HQ.
Quality Restoration
In 2007 this 1966 Ferrari 275 GTS received the Classiche Certification and was acquired by its current owner who decided to have it entirely restored by renowned marque expert Roelofs Engineering between 2012-2013 so it is now available to purchase in remarkable condition for a car which first rolled off the production line over half a century ago. During this restoration, the car was re- finished in a very elegant Nero with Cognac leather to the interior.
The 1966 Ferrari 275 GTS from Auxietre & Schmidt is a truly spectacular machine that looks just as good today as the day its engine roared to life for the first time and we’re sure some lucky collector will be adding it to their line up in 2020. It represents a great chance to buy one of just 200 cars produced, with this particular example being fine tuned by Roelofs Engineering, who is widely considered to be one of the best engineers for Ferrari engines worldwide.
