Certain car makers had a golden age of car making in our opinion here at Coolector HQ and, for Mercedes, the 1970s would be chief amongst them. There are few better examples of this in action than this stunning 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280SL which is going under the hammer with Bring A Trailer and the quality of the aesthetics really are second to none. With current bidding at a thoroughly reasonable $69k, you might just be able to bag yourself a bargain with this one.
The 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280SL on Bring A Trailer was first purchased by the current owner over 20 years ago and it comes in an awesome Moss Green Metallic over Cognac leather colourway. The power is delivered by a 2.8-litre inline-six which has been mated to a four-speed automatic transmission, and some of the stand out features include a dark green soft top, a colour-matched removable hardtop, 14″ wheels with body-colour covers, four-wheel disc brakes, air conditioning, and an AM/FM radio.
Magnificent Maintenance
Some of the recent maintenance on this majestic looking machine includes an oil change and the W113 is now offered on dealer consignment with a tool kit, a storage stand for the hardtop, factory literature, blue California plates, and a clean California title. Whilst originally finished in the Moss Green Metallic, the exterior has been refinished and boasts the colour-matched removable hardtop, a dark green soft top, and chrome bumpers with overriders.
14” steel wheels wear single-piece body-colour covers and 195/75 Michelin Rainforce MX4 whitewall tires help provide an excellent performance from this 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280SL on Bring A Trailer ($69k). There is a covered spare tire fitted in the trunk, the tie rod assemblies and centre drag link were recently replaced.
The cabin of this eye-catching Mercedes is upholstered in Cognac leather with matching carpets and a wood-trimmed console box. Some of the amenities include an analog clock, an AM/FM radio, a rear storage area, and an air-conditioning system fitted underneath the dash. The radio, the heater, and the defroster do not work in their current state, however.
Impressive Performance
The two-spoke steering wheel is home to a striking green dash that houses VDO instrumentation which includes the 140-mph speedometer and a tachometer, as well as gauges for fuel level, coolant temperature, and oil pressure. The five-digit odometer shows 67k miles on the clock so it’s still in a remarkably good condition considering its age.
The 2.8-liter M130 inline-six boasts Bosch mechanical fuel injection and is capable of delivering 168 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque when new and power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed automatic transmission.
