We’ve written about a few fair Ferraris here on the pages of The Coolector but it’s fair to say not many have been quite as striking and unusual as this 1975 Ferrari 308 Dino GT4 “Safari” Coupe which is going under the hammer with Worldwide Auctioneers. It has a lot more character than the average Ferrari and, as the name suggests, is more built for adventure than luxury and, as a result, boasts plenty of features that you wouldn’t often see in an Italian luxury car.
The 1975 Ferrari 308 Dino GT4 “Safari” Coupe from Worldwide Auctioneers is made all the more unique and special as it is a rare factory backseat-delete example that you definitely don’t see every day so excitement and bids will likely be high on this lot. It has some great features for all your road trip adventures which includes 3.0-litre, quad-cam V-8, four Weber carburetors, five-speed transaxle gearbox, independent upper and lower wishbone suspension and wheelbase.
Far Fetched Ferrari
This is unquestionably one of the most unique looking Ferraris we’ve written about here at Coolector HQ and for those who want to add a rare classic car to their collection for 2020, look no further. Ferrari’s 308 Dino GT4 was a trailblazer when it first hit the scene at the 1973 Paris Motor Show. It popularity was down to its unmistakable, wedge styling and wholly unique look compared to other vehicles at the time. Dino, named for Enzo Ferrari’s deceased son, was a personal labour of love and the 308 held his active interest.
The 1975 Ferrari 308 Dino GT4 “Safari” Coupe from Worldwide Auctioneers was Ferrari’s first mid-engine 2+2 (2 seats up front, 2 in rear) and the only 2+2 Ferrari which was ever raced with the factory’s support. In fact, Formula One racer, Niki Lauda, had a hand in development testing as well as the altered chassis, which was based on the Dino 246 GT but stretched out to make space for the back seats. The 3.0-litre quad-cam V-8 delivered 240 horsepower, delivered a thoroughly impressive top speed of 154 mph and could reach 62 mph from a standstill in just 6.4 seconds.
In this incredible example, all-terrain performance meets iconic Italian sportscar design in a singular, custom Ferrari “Safari” Dino 308 GT4. This visual triumph represents one of the most functional Ferraris in existence. Taking inspiration from the Lancia Stratos, DriverSource strived to craft a Dino that could handle rugged terrain as well as the blacktop. The alluring Rosso Chiaro red body rides atop coil over a 308 GT4 suspension to raise its height and is mounted by Corsa Velocita 15 x 7 wheels in 205/70VR15 Michelin tires; steering was rebuilt to perform with the configuration. Some of the most noticeable enhancements that have been carried out include fibreglass-enforced mud flaps, whip CB antenna, custom steel front bumper with D-hook mounts, external cage over rear bumper and quad Hella lamps.
Out Of This World Visuals
Just as impressive on the inside as the out, the original seats have been reupholstered with black leather and period-correct corduroy inserts, which have been stitched in factory pattern. Other improvements include upgraded leather luggage straps, Repa four-point seat belts, aluminium pedals, a laser-etched Safari logo on the front fender, an ABC fire extinguisher as well as a halftone gradient windshield banner, which finishes off the aesthetic expertly. The undercarriage has undergone a steam-cleaning detail and is largely preserved in original condition with fantastic structure. A thorough service and tune-up, totaling over $26,000, was completed in 2019 so this is one vintage Ferrari that is in immaculate condition throughout.
This unparalleled Ferrari Safari Dino 308 GT4 is a rare, factory backseat-delete example and the fact it comes with the original service book, a copy of the owner’s manual, extensive servicing records, a reproduction took kit, an original jack/emergency roll as well as recognition in the Dino GT4 Registry makes it the complete lot and some lucky Ferrari fan will be adding this breathtaking machine to their collection. Truly an opportunity that will not come again, this custom Ferrari “Safari” Dino is equipped to handle all the off-road adventure you throw in its path.
