1978 Land Rover Series III ‘Royal Review’

If you’ve ever dreamed of owning a Land Rover with a truly regal history, RM Sotheby’s has just the vehicle for you: a 1978 Land Rover Series III ‘Royal Review’ built specifically for Queen Elizabeth II. This particular model carries an aura of prestige and heritage that is impossible to replicate, and it’s now ready to roll into the hands of its next custodian.

The Series III, launched in 1978, is a quintessential representation of the Land Rover spirit—rugged, purposeful, and a symbol of understated British elegance. The Land Rover marque, having celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2023, has always been the go-to vehicle for off-road adventurers, explorers, and those with a love for functional design. But this Series III takes the crown (quite literally) for its unique history. Built with royal modifications, this Land Rover was destined for something beyond the regular utilitarian duties of its peers: it was intended for the use of the late Queen herself.

Initially dispatched to the Central Army Vehicle Depot in Ashchurch, Gloucestershire, this 109-inch Series III received a series of military modifications, including upgrades to its dash, grille, and door hinges. However, in 1979, it underwent a complete transformation at the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) workshop in Donington, where it was converted into a ‘Royal Review’ vehicle fit for Queen Elizabeth II. Key modifications included raising the height of the rear tub’s sides and adding bespoke twin doors that opened to steps for easy entry and exit by Her Majesty.

A Plexiglass windscreen and a chromed handrail were added to provide protection and stability for the Queen while she stood in the back during royal inspections. A subtle “traffic light” system was also installed, allowing the Queen or her representatives to communicate easily with the driver. This unique vehicle remained in military possession for more than three decades, and it wasn’t until 2011 that it was finally sold at auction—offering the public a rare chance to own a Land Rover that had served at the very highest level of British society.

Following its sale in 2011, the Land Rover underwent a painstaking three-year restoration, bringing it back to its full royal glory. Every detail was meticulously attended to: the chassis was overhauled, the custom interior retrimmed, and the cracked Plexiglass screen re-manufactured. Various perished parts were sourced and replaced, restoring the vehicle to a condition that would do its royal heritage justice. The Series III is powered by a classic 2,286-cc petrol engine paired with a manual gearbox—perfect for those who appreciate the mechanical charm of vintage motoring.

Now offered for sale once again, this Land Rover Series III ‘Royal Review’ presents an incredibly rare opportunity to own a piece of history that is as regal as it is rugged. With only two listed owners since its time in service, this Land Rover is more than a classic car—it’s a symbol of royal legacy and adventure. A perfect acquisition for collectors or enthusiasts with a penchant for British automotive royalty.
