In just a few days time, on the 5th of September to be precise, Porsche lovers are going to get the chance to get their hands on one of the coolest looking rides from this automotive behemoth courtesy of RM Sotheby’s London Auction. Needless to say, deep pockets are going to need to be a prerequisite for being the next owner of the 1982 Porsche 924 Carrera GTS Clubsport because it has a guide price of between £220,000 and £260,000 but when the car in question is quite as cool as this, it’s hard to argue with the price tag.
The 1982 Porsche 924 Carrera GTS Clubsport is extremely exclusive in nature (hence the hefty price) and this 924 GTS Clubsports coming up for auction at RM Sotheby’s is one of just fifteen ever made. Somewhat impressively, this one retains its original engine which is something that will appeal to classic car fans that love authenticity and vintage style. Having only done 35,000 miles from new, there is still plenty of life in this old dog yet and we’re sure bidding will reach fever pitch when it comes to this lot.
Race Style
With the first thing you’re likely to notice about this 1982 Porsche 924 Carrera GTS Clubsport is the superb cosmetic condition that it is in, you’ll be pleased to hear that this also extends to its mechanical condition and it still runs like a dream. This mesmerising machine is a so-called ‘transaxle-era’ Porsche and it is a spectacular example of how a group of dedicated racing engineers can turn a mild-mannered GT coupé into a most muscular automobile indeed.
The 1982 Porsche 924 Carrera GTS Clubsport may well set you back a quarter of a million pounds if you’re the lucky one come auction day but it’s difficult to put a price on owning such an iconic piece of automotive history. This sensational vehicle was originally introduced to replace the 914 as Porsche’s entry-level sports car but, somewhat surprisingly, struggled to begin with. Its Audi-derived two-litre inline-four was underwhelming in the power department, despite its exemplary road manners thanks to a 50/50 weight balance. As a result of the poor sales, Porsche decided to add some much required muscle, starting with the 924 Turbo.
One of just fifteen vehicles which were all painted Guards Red in left-hand drive and built to ‘Clubsport’ specification, this is a rare opportunity to own such a rare vehicle. The GTS and Clubsport were similar in appearance, with fiberglass-reinforced polyurethane front fenders and rear-quarter blisters which added around 50 mm to the car’s width, thereby allowing for wider Fuchs wheels. The GTS retained its folding headlamps, but the Clubsport boasted fixed headlamps behind Perspex covers and also had a plastic rear backlight and fixed plastic door windows with sliding panels, helping to bring weight down to about 1,045 kg.
Own a Piece of Motoring History
We’ve seen plenty of eye-catching machines go under the hammer with RM Sotheby’s but this stunning 1982 Porsche 924 Carrera GTS Clubsport is one of the rarest and most striking we’ve seen to date here at Coolector HQ. Exceptionally rare and very, very quick, the 924 Carrera GTS Clubsport is a exemplary track-capable Porsche that will definitely be the centre of attention at any club event, and is capable of shaming many supposedly faster vehicles.
If you’ve got a spare quarter million rattling around in your pockets and looking for something to invest it in, this amazing machine would be one of our first picks. In fantastic condition, both inside and out, and one of the most exclusive Porsches ever released, this is one lot that won’t be around for long come 5th of September.
