If you’re a fan of Italian supercars, it goes without saying that Lamborghini are going to be sitting at your top table but we’re willing to wage you won’t have seen many like this 1988 Lamborghini LM002 which is going under the hammer with RM Sotheby’s. It is one of only 328 LM002s produced between 1986 and 1993 so it is incredibly rare lot – hence the eye-watering guide price of €225k-€275k.
This 1988 Lamborghini LM002 from RM Sotheby’s is one of the Italian carmaker’s desirable early production, carburettor-engined versions and if you’re the lucky individual that gets their hands on this beastly looking steed, you’ll be adding a highly prized machine to your classic car collection. It has been fully resprayed in its original exterior colour of dark blue back in 2019 and looks as good as the day it rolled offed the production line.
Incredibly Rare Machine
Needless to say, not many were expecting the imposing yet incongruous sight of a six-foot-tall, near three ton, V-12-powered, four-wheel drive beast to put in an appearance at the 1986 Brussels Auto Show – much less one that would show up on the Lamborghini stand. But then Lamborghini was never one to follow norms or perceived wisdom, and this was well and truly embodied with the Italian carmaker’s fantastically idiosyncratic LM002.
Powered by an adapted version of the mighty Countach engine, the Lamborghini LM002 boasted a tubular steel chassis clad with aluminium and fibreglass panels. As you would expect, this release offered a typically luxurious Lamborghini interior which included a full leather trim, air conditioning and electric windows. A five-speed ZF gearbox transmitted the engine’s generous 444 bhp to the road, whilst switchable two- and four-wheel drive guaranteed that all road surfaces and environments could be tackled with aplomb.
Performance was, quite frankly, sensation for a vehicle of such considerable size, weight and rudimentary aerodynamics. It was capable of reaching 60 mph in under eight seconds and with a top speed of 118 mph, it was certainly no slouch. With a guide price that could reach €250k during the RM Sotheby’s auction, this one definitely won’t come cheap but will be the crowning glory to any classic car collection.
