Being from the UK, we’re big fans of the coast here at The Coolector and there are some parts of our green and pleasant island which are stunning to say the least. The Isle of Wight is chief amongst them and that’s where you will find the extraordinary looking Island Rest Residence from Ström Architects. This beautiful residential property is a breathtaking example of the sort of majestic modern architecture that is dotted around Cornwall and it has amazing views out over the water that you really can’t put a price on.
Island Rest Residence from Ström Architects is a low-lying holiday home in the Isle of Wight is clad in beams of blackened larch wood that given it a modern, minimalist and Scandinavian feel (the architects certainly sound Nordic but are based in England) that we’re loving here at Coolector HQ. It is a home away from home for a family of four, who wanted a place where they could spend quality time together. Island Rest Residence is located in a creek that looks out across The Solent – which is a 20-mile-long stretch of water that separates the Isle of Wight from mainland England.
Rest & Relaxation
With mesmeric views out onto the water that are about as peaceful and relaxing as it gets, it’s little wonder that the owners of Island Rest Residence come here to unwind from the stresses and strains of daily living. The build consists of a single-storey rectilinear volume clad with beams of black-stained larch wood and this low-lying structure was specifically chosen so as not to get in the way of the views of the surrounding natural landscape. As the area surrounding Island Rest is liable to being flooded, it has been positioned to sit at the highest point of the site.
One end of Island Rest Residence from Ström Architects is supported by a grassy hill, but as this gradually slopes away, slim metal poles are instead used to elevate the structure and provide excellent views beyond out onto the water. Expansive panels of glazing have also been added in on both sides of the property to help make the most of the sightlines and natural light throughout the day. Inside lies an open-plan living and dining space, complete with a jet-black kitchen suite which leads off to a raft of bedrooms for the owners’ three young children.
To give the parents an enhanced sense of privacy, their bedroom has been positioned on the opposite side of the house. It has ensuite bathroom facilities and access to a small deck that leads down to the swimming pool and lush, green garden space which is the ultimate in restful, relaxing spaces. The garden was an important part of this build and the landscaping was a consideration from the outset and has a very natural and organic feel, with mowed paths through wildflowers leading to and defining areas of different function.
