When it comes to watches, we like ours to be bold and impactful yet understated in their design aesthetic and that’s certainly compliments that can be applied to these new Model 3 Watches from British watch brand, Alkin. The Model Three series is the third release from British boutique watch brand Alkin, after their successful launch back in 2018. Founded by award-winning contemporary furniture designer and watch enthusiast Charlie Fowler, Alkin is born out of a long-held desire to build an uncompromising brand in its core values of high-quality ‘democratic design’ that will stand the test of time. The Model 3 Collection showcases this admirably.
Alkin has once again pursued a subtle, design-led approach with the Model Three collection of watches, which builds on the legacy of previous models wonderfully well and is probably our favourite release from this top-class watchmaker to date. Charlie originally set out to develop a dive watch with an external rotating bezel for the Model 3 range, but the design and development process evolved into two distinct watches in one shared case: the Diver and the Dual Time. Both of which are excellent from a design and performance perspective. And, with prices starting at $467 during the pre-order phase, they are also fantastic value for money.
While the Diver and the Dual Time Watches from Alkin are decidedly different, they both have simple, visually balanced designs that deliver maximum legibility, functionality, and versatility to the wearer. Charlie Fowler designed the case, hands, dial, and branding from scratch and there is a pleasing attention to detail throughout the design aesthetic on each of these devilishly dapper timepieces. The Arabic numerals, which were designed by British typographer Gareth Hague for models one and two, are once again exclusively used across the new collection.
The Model Three Diver is an evolution of Alkin’s signature style, carrying on key components from the Model Two, such as the bold sword and arrow hands. To create a sense of depth on the diver dial, it uses a sandwich dial design with the hour indices cut out to expose the Super-LumiNova lume on the lower dial. The cut-out markers at 3, 6, and 9 bear numbers delicately printed within their triangular forms, a nostalgic nod to vintage diver designs. To further enhance the sense of depth, the top dial is finished in a textured paint, creating a rugged finish that catches the light from every angle. A ceramic insert is housed within the 120-click unidirectional rotating bezel, with the numbers and markers etched and then filled with either BGW9 Super-LumiNova on the Blue and Black Dial variants and X1 C3 Super-LumiNova on the Green Dial.
Moving on to the Dual Time Watch which is a real departure from the traditional “tool watch” aesthetic, while still managing to keep the brand’s core principles of simplicity and functionality with some considerable aplomb. The result is a softer, more refined design that is ideally suited for everyday wear. The addition of the dual-time feature makes this classy timepiece a great choice for those who travel regularly. The bold colour choices add a touch of playfulness to this otherwise understated timepiece and we’re loving the visuals here at The Coolector.
