If you want a home that looks a little like the headquarters of a supervillain – something we unequivocally do here at The Coolector, then allow us to turn your attention to the amazing-looking Casa Alférez from Ludwig Godefroy Architects. Completed in 2023 in the Alférez region of Mexico, approximately an hour outside of Mexico City, is where you’ll find this stark two-bedroom weekend home with eye-catching forms and aesthetics.
This brutalist, holiday home is one for those who like their architecture to be a little different and Casa Alférez comes from the notion of a cabin in the woods and its the overarching feeling of a protective shelter in the middle of the forest. From the exterior, the cube design of Casa Alférez looks impenetrable, a solid board-formed entity with mismatched ornamentations. And we love it.
Purpose-built to resemble a vault – cut off from the rest of the world in a remote forest landscape – Casa Alférez boasts a sense of security and brutalist protection through the solidity of the concrete that shields and protects its inhabitants. The ground floor of this holiday home has high windows that ensure sightlines are maintained and provides access away from the ground-floor perimeter of the house. The interior spaces are all oriented upwards to the sky and the treetops that surround the home.
As a result of the tricky terrain on which Casa Alférez sits, the plan places height over width in terms of importance, opting for a minimalist, stacked footprint that measures 81 square metres (870 square feet) rather than an expensive and overbearingly sprawling foundation.
Consisting of five half-levels, the rooms of this stunning home act as a series of mezzanine levels, with built-in concrete furniture and wooden finished floors, whose thin profile is visible on the edge of the stair treads. The rooftop terrace – which has been designed as the morning space – has a mix of geometries with a round protruding skylight and an angled ramping form that caps the interior staircase.
