There are plenty of examples in architecture of not judging a book by its cover (or a house by its frontage, we suppose) but few are more striking than El Nido House from Taller Estilo Arquitectura. Located in the Merida region of Mexico, this decidedly unassuming house holds plenty of amazing features behind its front door which you definitely would expect when walking past.
El Nido House looks tiny on the face of things but, behind that front door, lies a mesmerising and surprisingly spacious piece of modern architecture that we’re loving here at Coolector HQ. This excellent piece of design shows off the sort of results that you can achieve with a long, thin plot of land and the name of the project, El Nido, stands for nest and comes from the Latin word nidus.
Laid Back Living
The overriding objective of El Nido House was to achieve a sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle to be inhabited and enjoyed without major complications. The architects behind the build created a project of great simplicity yet of great spatial richness by making use of a minimal and simple palette of materials.
El Nido House from Taller Estilo Arquitectura has a plot which measures 4.70 x 26.00m as a response to the needs of the users to have a space where experiences and ideas are generated. The designers behind the build have done a magnificent job of weaving together a pre-existing building with a completely new one and, in doing so, have given the new building the prominence as a great protective environment for the owners.
Much of the existing structure is preserved with original clay floors, stuccoed and painted walls, leaving an exposed vestige of the stone masonry walls and stuccoed ceilings with the exposed metal structure. El Nido House boasts an inner room and directs the user towards the transition point and towards the new building where the amazing use of space truly unfolds. A superb piece of contemporary architecture that shows a little can go a long way.
