Having been a child of the 80’s, we here at Coolector HQ can certainly appreciate the out and out magnificence of the Commodore 64 – one of the first ever home computer systems which, in our humble opinion, was all sorts of awesome. That being said, it does look horribly dated now, of course, and one of the prime indicators of how far home gaming has come between the 80s and today is probably the all-conquering GTA: V. If, like us, you wondered how this game would have looked on the exceptional Commodore 64 then you, sir, need wonder no longer because the super talented Balazs Kalocsai has shown us in his excellent “Welcome to the 80s” Series of videos.
GTA:V was, of course, an exceptional game that really tested the XBOX360 and PS3 to its limits and the end result was nothing short of miraculous but there was a certain something to be said for simplicity and had this game been made in the 1980s, it likely would have been just as popular on the Commodore 64 because, as the video above admirably illustrates, it looks as though it would have been equally as awesome as today’s iteration.
Balazs Kalocsai is a Hungarian animator who has superbly captured the essence of the 80s video games in his cracking Youtube channel, Majami Hiroz (pronounced ‘Miami Heroes’ FYI) and he has given other modern games his brilliant C64 treatment such as Watchdogs, Assassin’s Creed and Max Payne. We love Commodore 64’s and they will always have a place in our gaming heart here at Coolector HQ but, safe to say, we’re pretty glad that games aren’t quite as basic as this anymore but we’re definitely glad that we cut our gaming teeth on the Commodore 64.
