The Mercedes-Benz 280SE 3.5 Cabriolet. The name itself evokes images of sun-drenched coastlines, effortless style, and the golden age of motoring. This isn’t just a car; it’s a rolling sculpture, a testament to handcrafted quality and timeless design. And this particular example, finished in a striking Silver Grey Metallic, is a truly exceptional representation of this automotive icon.

Produced between 1969 and 1971, the 280SE 3.5 Cabriolet represents the pinnacle of the W111 series. With fewer than 1,400 units ever built, it’s a rare and highly coveted machine, a symbol of automotive excellence that continues to captivate collectors and enthusiasts worldwide. Its graceful lines, accentuated by chrome accents, the imposing upright grille, and the classic twin round headlights, all contribute to its undeniably elegant and distinctly European aesthetic. The convertible top, seamlessly folding away, only enhances the car’s iconic silhouette, transforming it into the ultimate open-air cruiser.

Beneath the beautifully sculpted hood resides Mercedes-Benz’s first production V8 engine, a 3.5-litre masterpiece that delivers 200 horsepower and 211 lb-ft of torque. This powerful yet refined engine, coupled with a smooth 4-speed automatic transmission, provides an exhilarating driving experience, blending effortless performance with a sense of classic motoring charm.

This particular 280SE 3.5 Cabriolet boasts an impressive history. Originally finished in Silver Grey Metallic (option code 180) and assembled in November 1970, it was exported to the USA, where it remained under single ownership until 2007. A letter from Mercedes-Benz confirms its original engine (11698012002705) remains in place to this day, a crucial detail for collectors. In 2011, the car made its way to Germany, where it was acquired by renowned restoration expert Rosier Classic Sterne.

While already restored, Rosier further refined the vehicle, removing the American side markers and replacing the miles-based odometer with a kilometer-based unit. In 2012, the car found a new home with a German collector, who cherished it until 2022. During this time, in November 2012, the engine underwent a professional rebuild by Motoren Instandsetzung Oldenburg, ensuring its continued performance and reliability.

Now presented in stunning restored condition, this 280SE Cabriolet embodies the timeless craftsmanship of German engineering. Its exceptional build quality translates into a driving experience that is both luxurious and serene, offering unparalleled comfort and a sense of complete detachment from the outside world. This Silver Grey icon is more than just a classic car; it’s a piece of automotive history, a symbol of open-top elegance, and a testament to the enduring appeal of Mercedes-Benz’s golden era. It’s available for viewing by appointment at their showroom in Munich, and importantly, is on EU taxes paid status.
