So far as we’re concerned here at Coolector HQ, less is often more when it comes to watch design and there are few better examples of this in action than with the understated and effortlessly cool MKII Hellion Watch which looks the part and, crucially, doesn’t break the bank. This classy accessory from fledgling watchmakers, MKII, who boast the tagline “built for the pursuit”, has definitely got adventure in its blood and for any man seeking a striking new timepiece this autumn, look no further.
Priced at a thoroughly reasonable $649, the Hellion Watch from MKII will begin shipping in November so make sure you get your order in now if you want one on your wrist in time for Christmas. There is a no nonsense approach to the design of this cracking timepiece and its understated elegance is right up our street here at The Coolector and for those men who like their watches to make a statement about their style, this is going to be ticking the right boxes.
What’s in a Name
In 1944, the Hellion was the name of one of many experimental weapons systems which had been designed to clear beaches at arm’s length ahead of the amphibious landings. As it happens, the weapons systems proved ineffective, but the name Hellion came to describe the spirit of the pilots who flew missions over the Pacific and those that made the foundation of the UDT/SEALs – pilots such as John Glenn of the VMF-218 “Hellions”.
The MKII Hellion Watch ($649) has been designed in honour of the kind of people who threw themselves at a heavily defended beach dressed as if on a snorkeling holiday with the subtle addition of towing 40 lbs of explosives. The kind of person that hands a hotel manager today’s equivalent of $50,000 in back pay towards a V-J Day party for his teammates and asks only to be notified once the tab ran out; ending the party…12 days later it turns out.
Brilliantly designed and boasting first class materials and specifications, it’s easy to see why watch fans are flocking towards the MKII Hellion in their droves. With a design drawing inspiration from the legendary Elgin canteen watch which was developed for the UDT during the war the Mk II Cruxible-Hellion is 10x more water resistant (100 meters) and features SuperLumiNova BGW9 on the hands and dial, screw down crown, and solid stainless steel (316L) 39 mm case.
Battle Ready Watch
Needless to say, the Hellion Watch from MKII has a robust disposition due to the events which inspired it. It boasts a SII NE15 (Rotor features Côtes de Genève) movement with quickset date, hack setting, automatic with manual winding capability. It also has double domed sapphire crystal glass, with anti-reflective coating on interior surface only to ensure the dial is properly protected whatever adventures you take it on.
We love watches that don’t feel the need to be ostentatious and instead rely on minimalist and functional design aesthetics and this Hellion Watch from MKII definitely falls into that bracket. The $649 price tag is the icing on the cake for those seeking a high quality watch without the associated price tag. Definitely one we’re looking to get our hands 0n here at Coolector HQ.
