When it comes to classic cars, few are more visually impressive and sought after than those from Porsche and amongst their most iconic machines is this 356 Pre-A Gläser Cabriolet Split Window offering which is available to purchase from German luxury car specialists, Schaltkulisse. If you’ve got incredibly deep pockets and are in the market for one of Porsche’s most mesmeric machines, this could be the one for you.
Rolling off the production line in the 1950s, this 356 Pre-A Gläser Cabriolet Split Window from Porsche is in remarkable condition given it is well over half a century old. It is one of a mere 242 cabriolets which were crafted by Gläser between 1950 and 1952 and if you’re the sort that wants to be in exclusive company when it comes to classic cars, this one is an essential purchase.
Porsche Perfection
As the fledgling Porsche sought to establish true series production following its relocation from Gmünd to Stuttgart, its trusted coachbuilder, Reutter, often have an overload of orders. This problem compelled Porsche in 1950 to send a handful of 356 cabriolets to Gläser, the Weiden-based workshop that had helped put together luxurious convertibles for Mercedes-Benz, Horch, and Maybach.
This Porsche 356 Pre-A Gläser Cabriolet Split Window from Schaltkulisse has undergone a high-quality restoration which included refinishing the exterior in dark blue, reupholstering the interior in black, and installing a matching black soft top. By the early 2010s the 356 was purchased by a German collector based in Bonn, as evidenced by an appraisal by DEKRA Automobil GmbH of Munster. It has been fitted with a correct 1,300 cc type 506 engine and this stunning cabriolet was recently treated to a comprehensive mechanical restoration that ensures it drives like a dream to match its majestic aesthetics.
As one of less than 130 vehicles that have been bodied by Gläser in 1952, this incredibly rare cabriolet from Schaltkulisse abounds in eye-catching early details such as the split-window arrangement and unadorned coachwork. It would make a sensational addition to any marque collector, and is ideally suited for display at Porsche gatherings and regional concours d’elegance or for taking for a spin on the open road.
