Porsche Design x Hodinkee GP 2023 Edition Watch

The Porsche Design Chronograph 1 from Hodinkee is a limited-edition timepiece that commemorates the 2023 edition of the GP Ice Race. It is a striking, handsome, retro-styled, high-performance chronograph with a serious backstory that we’re loving here at The Coolector. Ice racing has been popular in Austria since the 1930s, and the Professor Ferdinand Porsche Memorial Race kicked off Porsche’s connection with ice racing in 1953. The GP Ice Race was revived in 2019 with the help of Porsche’s nephew, and it is now one of the most anticipated motoring events in Europe during the winter season.

The Porsche Design Chronograph 1 GP 2023 Edition ($9650) is a faithful recreation of a 1972 model, and the new version faithfully captures the wonderful mid-century spirit of the original. It is crafted from raw titanium with a bead-blasted finish, which makes it lightweight, robust, and ready for icy automotive adventures. The black DLC-coated crown and pushers accent the case, and the black quick-release tabs on the fabric strap and the black automotive leather strap provide a perfect contrast.

The standard fabric unit attaches with velcro and is long enough to cinch over a winter coat, while the black leather dresses it up for less extreme conditions. The hooded lugs evoke the 1970s, a time when integrated bracelets and smooth contours were in fashion as tool watches became elevated expressions of masculine style. The pleasingly proportioned plain bezel frames the wonderfully eye-catching dial.

This Hodinkee x Porsche Design watch boasts a flyback chronograph that runs on the mechanical WERK 01.240 movement, which is a certified chronometer with a 48-hour power reserve. This proprietary movement is made by the Swiss firm Concepto and is finished at Porsche Design’s own manufacturer in Solothurn. The chronograph is cam actuated and uses an oscillating pinion clutch for precise, crisp actuation of the flyback function. A super-cool titanium caseback does a great job of concealing the movement and lists the 2023 commemoration of the GP 2023 Ice Race as well as the limited edition number.
