Ray Donovan

With the recent passing of the irreplaceable James Gandolfini, it stings to even talk about pretenders to the Sopranos crown but that’s exactly what we have with the much-hyped and critically well-received, Ray Donovan, which recently debuted on Show Time.

Starring Liev Schreiber as the title character, this 12 part series follows him in his role as a “fixer” for a law firm until his own personal waters are muddied by the release of his father, played by Jon Voight, from prison.

The show has been devised and written by Ann Biderman (who worked on the much acclaimed, and favourites of mine, NYPD Blue and Southland) and, if the trailer above is anything to go by, she has got another gritty hit on her hands with Ray Donovan.

Set in Los Angeles, with the Donovan character heralding from South Boston, the expertly crafted crime drama has already broken records in the US by breaking viewership figures for a premiere on Show Time – testament to how much people bought into the shows excellent writing and acting credentials.
