The materials used in the design of a home will, of course, make a big difference to the aesthetic impact and you’ll rarely see a property more impactful than Schlotfeldt Residence from Omar Gandhi. Located in Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, this magnificent piece of architecture can be found atop a series of curves and hairpins that wind up a mountain and its remoteness is a big part of its appeal to us here at The Coolector.

Boasting an undeniable mountain cabin charm in an avant garde exterior, Schlotfeldt Residence really is a sight to behold and it possesses a contemporary vibe throughout the inside and outside. It is a compact contradiction that really does provide contemporary luxury living in a truly rugged alpine living. What’s not to like?

The base of the pyramid-like building consists of a garage, which tucks into the side of the hill with a section of covered outdoor space beneath the house. From there, you’ll find a covered steel perforated stairs that wind up to the entrance. A skylight delivers a striking shaft of light into the middle of the home, but the stand out feature is unquestionably the 270-degree vista from the main living space through floor-to-ceiling windows.

Such uninhibited sight-lines have a price to pay. Namely, the fact that be positioned at a high altitude with little tree cover, Schlotfeldt Residence has no cover from the uncompromising elements—wind, snow, and fire are all plausible. The robust house takes these challenges in its stride however courtesy of the Corten steel exterior which is durable and essentially weatherproof. There is also a distinct lack of glazed openings on the base of the building protect it from ground fires. A first class piece of modern architecture.
