We love looking for unusual holiday destinations here at Coolector HQ and of all the locations that we think of when it comes to travel, Namibia might not be one of the first places that springs to mind but now we’ve stumbled across a rather extraordinary looking place by the name of Shipwreck Lodge on Nambia’s Skeleton Coast, that is all about to change. For those who love a remote escape from it all, read on.
Shipwreck Lodge on Skeleton Coast in Namibia is located between the Hoarusib and Hoanib rivers in the Skeleton Coast National Park, and is just 45 km from Möwe Bay. These eye-catching and wonderfully made shipwreck-shaped chalets are placed carefully between the dunes and boast an extraordinary view of the Atlantic Ocean where the cold Benguela current provides guests with a refreshing breeze that will keep you cool in the desert setting.
A Remote Escape
With a total of just 10 cabins available to choose from, there is a highly exclusive nature to the Shipwreck Lodge in Namibia and it is the real remoteness of the setting in the heart of nature that is sure to make this highly unusual hotel appeal to adventure lovers. Those who stay here can look forward to experiencing the harshness of the desert and the beauty of these solitary landscapes which are overflowing with geological history. Learn about the fauna and flora adapted to survive in these harsh conditions – all from the comfort of the restaurant deck.
The Shipwreck Lodge on Namibia’s stark, Skeleton Coast has the ten cabins carefully dotted amongst the sand dunes and the ability to wake up with the mesmerising views of the Atlantic Ocean is one that really is impossible to ignore. The design of these lodges takes inspirations from the many shipwrecks that can be found up and down the Skeleton coast and the emphasis is on having a light, eco-friendly footprint that doesn’t harm this delicate environment.
There are plenty of neat little features within the Shipwreck Lodges that will make them feel like a home away from home for residents including a writing desk and wood burning stove to keep warm on those chillier nights. In days gone by, the whole coast of Namibia had the moniker of Skeleton Coast. Today, however, only the park located on the northern coast, which stretches from the Kunene River to Ugab River, is called by this name. It covers an area of 16,845 km2 and it was declared a nature reserve in 1971, and serves to protect nearly a third of Namibia’s coastline.
A Stay Filled With Adventure
Any visitor to Namibia’s Shipwreck Lodge isn’t going to be short of things to see and do. Just some of the activities that you’ll be able to get up to during a stay include a full day excursion to Möwe Bay where you’ll get to see their brilliant seal colony and explore remnants of the Suiderkus and other ship wrecks in the area. You’ll also be able to enjoy a 4×4 Hoarusib River excursion that may see you come face to face with brown hyenas and desert adapted elephants and lions.
For anyone that likes their holidays and hotels to stay off the beaten track and offer something that bit out of the ordinary, you’ll be in your absolute element with the Shipwreck Lodge in Namibia. This extraordinary hotel is quite unlike anything else we’ve seen here at Coolector HQ and the chance to be at one with Namibia’s nature in an out of this world desert setting has definitely seen us adding this to our bucket list of places to visit.
