Table tennis is a pursuit that we’ve got a lot of time for here at Coolector HQ and though it is one of our favourite sporting activities, there’s little denying that it could do with jazzing up a bit visually. Well, enter Thomas Mayer and his awesome looking university project called the Table Tennis Trainer which superimposes a graphical overlay onto the table for some awesome looking visuals as you play.
Before you get too excited about the project of laser filled game of ping pong, it’s important to realise that this is a concept design that isn’t on the mainstream market but, such is its awesomeness, we’re sure that it could soon be.
Mayer’s objective with this incredible design project was to track the ping pong ball in realtime to create data visualisations for trainers and players to help improve their performance – and the end result is might impressive to say the least. Check out a video and a few more shots below:

It never ceases to amaze us how innovative some design minded individuals can be and Thomas Mayer certainly falls into this bracket with his incredibly inventive Table Tennis Trainer system. Whilst it has been carried out as part of a university project, we’re sure that we won’t be alone here at Coolector HQ in having our fingers crossed that it might become a reality.
