Nestled into the steep slopes of Mazama, Washington, the Tiny Leaf Cabin is an architectural marvel designed by GO’C for a client drawn to the Methow Valley’s dramatic views and year-round recreational opportunities. This small yet sophisticated outpost is perfectly positioned for mountain biking and cross-country skiing, serving as a primary residence and future guest studio.
The Tiny Leaf Cabin is a 15’x22’ structure cleverly bermed into the hillside. Its modest footprint makes the most of its surroundings with large glazed sliding doors on the south facade, seamlessly blending indoor and outdoor spaces. This connection to nature is further emphasized by the flat roof, which not only provides bonus deck space but also holds snow in winter, improving thermal mass.
Constructed with cast-in-place concrete exterior walls, the cabin naturally integrates into the site’s topography. The interior is a masterclass in efficiency and simplicity, using a palette of concrete and wood to create a warm, inviting space. Designed like a ship’s cabin, the interior features clever and hidden storage solutions to maximize functionality.
The cabin includes a small kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom, each designed to optimize space. Shared storage volumes separate the spaces, while the bed is raised to accommodate large drawers for everyday items. Behind these drawers lies occasional storage extending the full depth of the bed. The thickened wall between the kitchen and bathroom houses pull-out side panels for pantry and utility storage on one side and bathroom storage on the other. A cosy bookcase at the head of the bed creates a perfect nook for reading.
Natural light floods the interior through the expansive exterior glazing and a linear skylight that washes the rear wall with light. The exterior palette of steel cladding and concrete walls was carefully chosen to blend with the landscape. The steel cladding and awning panels are designed to age and patina to earth tones, while the concrete walls reflect the hues of the surrounding rocks, allowing the cabin to blend seamlessly into its environment.
The Tiny Leaf Cabin is a testament to the power of thoughtful design, combining modern amenities with a deep respect for the natural world. Its ability to merge into its surroundings, whether in the dry summer months or deep winter snows, makes it a perfect retreat for outdoor enthusiasts. With its efficient use of space and connection to nature, the Tiny Leaf Cabin offers a serene and functional escape, embodying the spirit of the Methow Valley.
